Chiricahua, I’m in love
Sauna, I’m in love
Ice water, I’m in love
This is what falling in love feels like
over and over
and this is the smile it brings
and this is the intimacy with here
and with now
right now
yes
This is love
and the sun
each breath sipping in the sunlight
each tree so delicate on top
of the ridge
in the sun
against the blue
and then birds alight and land
déposer
a walk, in two parts
1.
I am surrounded by friends.
the hawk
the butterfly
the blue and blue birds
the sky
the chipmunk
and yes, the fly
Please don’t think I don’t love my human ones
they’re so dear
with their two legs,
upright torsos
and shining, mouth-opening faces.
These mountains are my friends
in the way that wisdom is a friend
and the wind and the creek passing through
I’ve never been fonder of the caress
from a grass,
a lover so humble I didn’t see her
Enough for now to sit on this rock, my friend,
with the sun, my pleasure, at my back.
2.
This time, it was the wind
that made me cry or
maybe it was the cup
or Joan at my back
or the majesty of it all
and laughter
for the blue of the feather
is the same
as the blue of the sky
the laughter is its sound
